HISTORY OF SCOTLAND COUNTY INDEXING

As you search this website for indexing information, there are several factors you should keep in mind:

  • Prior to 1-1-1995, all Registers of Deeds in the State of North Carolina had no indexing guidelines. Therefore, all offices indexed documents in different ways. There was no uniformity in indexing.

  • In Scotland County, prior to 1-1-95, and defined as "Pre 95 Real Estate" there were several unusual ways of indexing certain documents:

    • The surname which began with Mc...such as McNair...was indexed Nair Mc...you will have to key in a surname in the Mc search and place the Mc at the end of the name rather than the beginning.

    • If you are searching for a Bank name, we set Bank out and then listed the name of the bank. Example: First Southern Savings Bank- you would key in Bank First Southern Savings to call this name up.

    • Also, church would be a set out: Example: Faith Presbyterian Church- key in Church Faith Presbyterian to call this up.

  • On January 1, 1995, Uniform Indexing Standards for Registers of Deeds in the State of North Carolina became effective according to G. S. 161.22. Therefore, of course, the Mc Surname is now indexed McNair as presented for recording. (Consolidated Real Property)

    • Banks are indexed under the name of the bank and churches as used by those institutions and as presented for recording

If for any reason you cannot find a document, please feel free to call our office at (910) 277-2575. We will be happy to assist you with any problem.
